Middle of March updates!

Hi Everyone!

I can't quite believe we are hitting the middle of March already - time is certainly flying! I just wanted to see how everyone is getting along with their studies?

Unfortunately I have been unable to come along to the campus sessions to discuss Module 1 and further to this my teaching schedule has crossed over with the Skype sessions! Feel as though luck hasn't really been on my side yet but as I've received the latest email from Paula I am hoping to make some of those dates which were listed!

Carrying on from this I did notice that from reading some of your blogs the topic of conversation was about professionalism? I found different ideas that were written down all very enlightening and when I asked myself 'what is professionalism?' I kind of had a rough idea however after googling it, this is what it said...

professionalism
prəˈfɛʃ(ə)n(ə)lɪz(ə)m/
noun
  1. 1.
the competence or skill expected of a professional.
"the key to quality and efficiency is professionalism"
  2. 2.
the practising of an activity, especially a sport, by professional rather than amateur players.
    "the trend towards professionalism"

I think that this particular description is fairly vague and for example form reading Irini's blog she describes 'the professional' and this shows a more in-depth and broader variety of the term.

I am interested to keep hearing more of your thoughts as I wasn't able to meet with Paula
So any light you can shine to me I would greatly appreciate.

    Thanks,

    S X

Task 2a; Reflective Practise/Journal Writing

I have just finished Reader 2 and again found all the points made interesting and had me nodding along in agreement at times. Especially right at the beginning where we are exploring the ideas of reflection and experience.

Taking an experience and turning it into knowledge is exactly what I can relate to in the fitness industry. After completing a course in gym instruction not so long ago, I had no idea how to perform a bench press correctly but after experiencing being taught the correct demo on how not to teach and how to teach it, I walked away with the confidence that the next time someone asks me how to do it I shall have the knowledge to teach it and not shy away from it anymore!
Just using that example in my own head makes me understand this concept so much more, as I am reading I try and relate a circumstance to my own life and realise that I can relate to this.

I found what Graham Mcfee describes about the term bachelor very matter of fact, and in the reader it asks the question; 'Have you ever known something before you realise what it means to you?' I could think of a list of these! But as time goes on and you are out in the big wide world you do come across more and more experiences which allow you to reflect back and almost snigger at what it may originally meant to you as apposed to what it 'should' mean or an alternative. I love learning new things and as the old saying goes 'You learn something new everyday' - only if your open to it!

After touching on the Kolbs cycle before, looking at it again with the reflective reading thoughts in my mind I have almost seen it slightly differently. I  the reader it asks 'at what point do you feel you enter learning?' For me I would enter this cycle at Active experimentation. My example of this is what I am doing right now - blogging. I had absolutely no idea about this blogging world as i have previously mentioned, so for me I didn't go straight into it and make it up ask went along process, I had a little look at what other people had done, made a page up and wrote a few things, re-read it about a thousand times, the changed it again before I was exhausted from looking at my computer for hours! So in other words I was trying out what I had learnt from reading other peoples blogs and had a go myself which took me a while but hey I got there in the end!

    Journal;

I have made a start on my journal every night since last Thursday (12th March) and I have found it very therapeutic. Its most definitely benefited my husband who doesn't have his ear chewed off before bed as now I'm writing it all down instead!
Since November I have faced my biggest challenge to date which is training for the Virgin London Marathon. With it now only being 5 weeks away I am coming close to my last few long runs which has been extremely challenging not only physically but also mentally. So when I came across this task I thought GREAT because as the runs have increasingly become longer and more enduring, I have found my mind ticks over and thinks about absolutely everything. If I have had a problem lurking in my mind before I run, by the time I have finished I will have a solution or a plan in place. It  amazing to use that time as best as you can - especially to help keep your mind off the pain of running after 18 miles!
So continuing on from this, on Sunday when it got to the time for journal writing I felt completely exhausted and found my hand just writing and writing until my hand actually hurt. After my 20 miles I thought I was kind of down with thinking about my day, but actually I have used my brain again but in a totally different way. Again this has pushed my boundaries into trying something new and so far I am proud to say I have stuck with it!

    Task 1D - 2D Images

A picture paints a thousand words....

As a part of task 1D I have made a Flickr account of pictures which I would love to share with you all.
Working on the cruise ships created so many memories and I have mentioned it before but I do love a good picture! My house is full of them as I just believe they are forever lasting memories captured which is so special.

I have created an album full of various moments in my life which are special to me, starting from my professional dancing days, cycling from John o groats to lands end, completing my first half marathon and my wedding day!

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/131676482@N07/

I was interested into logging into Flickr as I had actually never heard of it before. Its again very addictive and another time consumer! Instagram has completed exploded world wide and what I think people love about it is the way that its simple to use. I also think its security is great as starts as it means to go on - by this I mean you can make your profile private from the get go, unlike Facebook where it took me ages to discover all the options of privacy. Only friends can see or friends of friends can see.... got me very confused so I think I actually use Instagram more as in a weird way I feel more safe using it. This could be because at the time Facebook started everyone wanted to be friends with everyone and as time goes on you suddenly realise that you have 'friends' on there who you haven't spoken to in years. Also I feel that Instagram only has one purpose and that is to simply post and share pictures, not only friends you can follow but businesses and celebrities (who amazingly are not private accounts so you can be nosey on there lives too!)

As soon as I've seen a album uploaded on Facebook of friends recent holiday I most definitely have a browse as I find that sort of thing interesting and a way of keeping up to date with every ones busy lives! For me its better than reading a long soppy status update's which half the time don't even make sense! With a social media platform such as Facebook I feel there can be many implications for posting pictures as without the right security it has been known that hacking can take an effect and what you think is being uploaded for all your friends to see, others may be getting access to. Obviously the security on this is a lot better than it used to be as now they have the ability to block and report people which I think is a great addition.

In regards to 'the importance' of this social media idea, I think that the more you can share, the more your promoting - for example M&S Instagram will be uploaded the newest range of clothes, or the new dessert you have to try. Its about the consumer knowledge and the more they can see the more they will know! It co-insides with the 'Hashtag' which I believe originated from Twitter. Although my friends and I used to laugh at how annoying it is when someone posts a picture with a thousand hash tags next to it (not always necessary) it can lead you into related thoughts from others who have a public viewing on their page.

Visual tools on social media I believe is very important as it backs up expressive thoughts through a way everyone can understand and can not be misinterpreted easily. I love it and will continue to use it as my favourite type of social media communication.

I will look forward to seeing all of your images on your blogs too!

    Task 1C - Audio-Visual

    Hi All,

So as apart of Task 1C I have made a 45 second clip on YouTube 'Starting out on BAPP'.

Please click on the link below to view it!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AnjAebYIjI&feature=youtu.be

This was totally new to me - have to admit never have enjoyed listening to myself talk on camera! Loved getting into making this clip though it's proved to be easier than expected which is always a bonus!

Task 1b - Professional communication technologies

    Facebook;

So after doing my back ground reading I found myself doodling notes along side articles that I had printed - mainly focusing on relating certain aspect to me and my everyday activities which usually occur on the phenomenon that is Facebook.

I'm sure that most of you will agree that when Facebook first came along and into our little lives it was confusing and 'not as good as' Bebo or My Space, however with time it has evolved and to be honest I would struggle to live without it! (Hope that's not too tragic to admit!)
In Hamiltons notes it talks about how participation is a function, and just that sentence alone makes so much sense to me -  Mark Zuckerberg's idea caught on starting from just 1500 registered members through his university, helping create a way for students to interact..... 1 billion users later and he has one of Web 2.0's biggest success stories. I could go on for days talking about the way Facebook can be used but I want to focus mainly on interaction between others and how I have personally benefited from its uses.

I remember using my Facebook account religiously when I embarked on my first ever professional dance contract with Carnival cruise lines. It was great as I had all my friends that I wanted to keep in contact with at home, and with a bit of free wifi I would be able to keep in touch with those via pictures or private messages - a cooler way of emailing I used to think! What a lot of people will talk about is how Facebook is constantly changing, wether it be the layout of the News feed or how you can add, tagg or delete posts with ease.  In the memo map it shows how number 2 in the centre is 'control your own data'. This for me is why I think Facebook is so popular because you have complete control on what is shown to others, who can see your profile or pictures and you even have the power to block and report other people which is so important in this day and age.

    Facebook provides so much more than just interaction with friends - it has gone on to allow platforms for people to promote businesses through the way of creating a page which you can control the viewers. I can happily relate to this success as I have used this myself to make a page promoting my pilates classes in the south. I can honestly say it helped me boost my numbers, meet new people, and give me more confidence in starting something new on my own. See below the link to my page that I am using as my example;

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pilates-For-You/110651575809969?ref=hl

As a social network, Facebook is something that a lot of people see as a positive for interaction with people they may not have necessarily interacted with in a classroom or a boardroom. Getting to know someones personality may be as simple as 'liking' the same thing, or sharing a post which is of interest to you. These two features opened so many doors and I believe it is pure genius when you actually think about it - YouTube videos of dancers, singers, funny stunts, scary stunts are constantly filling up my feed, and the usual talk in the office the next day is ' did you see that video of....' and without Facebook we may not have even seen it. I would like to use an example of this which happened today whilst sculling through my feed. A friend of mine shared a video which demonstrated cooking Coca Cola. The lady pours a whole bottle into a pan and heats the liquid up to find all the water will evaporate to leave a substance which looks like nothing more than thick tar, explaining that the remainders of the bottle in the pan is pure sugar. Put me off having a Coca Cola... YES!

As my reading progressed and I got into the more deeper issues that people can face whilst setting up a Facebook account, I soon understood how important ethical considerations for using the web are. Kuehns article on 'Getting into trouble on Facebook' outlines the troubles superiors such as teachers or work bosses may come across. I have a few friends who are primary and secondary school teachers and from speaking to them directly they can not 'enjoy' the social media scene with ease as others may like to do - they have to always be aware of how dangerous and vulnerable the situations may be if caught crossing any sort of boundary. I guess it its common knowledge to some but to others who may be new to it could find it hard to get to grips with. With my experience working with children through dance I have always been conscious of making and maintaining professional working relationship with them but the moment I see a friend request from one of them you soon realise that ranting about your life on your status may not be such a good idea! This is not my style but you all have one or two friends on Facebook that feel its appropriate to explain there every emotion about a private matter to the whole of the web... that sort of thing is just asking for trouble!

    Using the Web 2.0 for learning;

The programme has already allowed me to branch out of my comfort zone, and introduced me into the wonderful world of blogging and like I mentioned in one of my previous blogs I am really enjoying it. Taking the time to put your ideas and point across to others is a way of communication which I have not previously done before. As I was talking about Facebook you can see I am used to that, communicating through posting videos, pictures, 'liking' something etc but to write down your thoughts in this format is a learning curve which I feel will continue to help me through my professional life after the BAPP course.

As I touched on before, social media for me is a way of interacting with others and exploring new and interesting things. My new found love being Instagram which has a mass following based upon images. A picture can scream a thousand words which is what I love - as I previously mentioned visually I capture things more than reading an essay on it. In the world of arts, whatever it might be you can always indulge in an image and make what you want of it. Having said that keeping up to date with Kim Kardashians hair styles can hardly be educational but thats what I love about the variety!!!

Youtube has broken ground for so many people across the world and the beauty of this is that anyone can use it! As ill get to know in the next couple of days for my task 1c. Again its a first like the blogging for me to be making a Youtube video but I'm excited to create something new and to share with you lovely lot!

What have I learnt from Web 2.0? Well, I was confused at the start because I had never even heard the term before, but once I did my back ground reading I soon realised its something I use everyday on a personal and professional level. It will always evolve and better what we already have and I think we are extremely lucky to be living in a time where almost everything is accessible by the touch of a button!

    Hope you enjoyed my blog!

    The Blogging World

Still getting in the hang of the blogging world - however I must admit like many of the other Web 2.0 platforms it can become very addictive! I don't know if any of you are like me and check my Facebook and Instagram at least 3 times a day!

I have seen people on Facebook posting blogs about the next holiday adventure they are about to embark on, or beauty tips that they want to share but have honestly never thought of a blog as a social networking tool that I would use on a regular basis. However as I am getting more stuck into the course I am understanding that this world of blogging can be extremely educational!

Reader 1 and the introduction of professional communications technology has got me thinking and I am finding the stats and theories very interesting.

O'Reilly's article written in 2005 really explains how simply brainstorming ideas has set the next level of social media platforms which we have just at the touch of a button. From Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 we have now whats regarded as the next generation of software. I thought I would copy the image of the Meme Map which is demonstrated in the article for some of you to see.

    Web2MemeMap

Personally I feel that images and visuals help me understand and develop my ideas and as a person and I work particularly well with this way of thinking. The above image explores many ideas, but a few stood out to me more than the rest. The way that nowadays you can control your own data, using the web as a platform to promote everything and anything, use social media as a way of communication with others and to express feelings about one subject.

Thats how I am left feeling about blogging, I get to express my feelings and ideas knowing that people can read it and take away what they want. That's the beauty of Web 2.0!

I'm only half way through and getting sucked into different articles from the Reader so will be back with more ideas to discuss soon!
Enjoy this lovely sunshine while it lasts!

This CV which you have just read has not yet been updated to my current job which I feel I would like to describe here in my next section of my CV. I wanted to elaborate more about my dance background and why I wanted to apply of this course. Combining the two previous  CV's together I think you can get a pretty good gist of who I am and what I am about.....

My professional training commenced at the age of eighteen at The Northern Ballet School in Manchester, UK. We had numerous professional staff including David Needham, Eric Carpenter, Tracey Baxter, Darren Suarez and our principal Patricia McDonald to name just a few.
My college training included intensive dance, singing and drama classes, which over a period of three years, would essentially prepare me for a career in either the classical or musical theatre industry.

At Northern Ballet School, we studied a vast range of dance styles to give us the best training and preparation for a career in the dance industry this included: Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Contemporary, Acrobatics, Gymnastics, Hip Hop, Double Work, Heel Work, Pas de Deux, Drama and Singing as well as Advanced Tap.

Whilst at college we were continually assessed in the Ballet and Jazz disciplines to ascertain if we had gained the required standard in order to achieve our professional Trinity diplomas. We were all given marks in each assessed discipline that reflected how well we had demonstrated the techniques required to pass the assessment. We were also videoed during these assessments, this enabled us to have a feedback lesson with the teacher of that discipline and gave us a chance to watch ourselves in the class and learn from mistakes and judge our weaker points to hopefully correct these and gain a higher mark in the next assessments.
We were lucky to be given the chance to perform in 3 shows a year at our college over two years, a full length ballet in December,a musical in March and our final end of year summer show which the whole school was involved in. These shows gave us a taste of real professional performances to a live audience in our colleges in house state of the art theatre and we were treated as adults and professional dancers the whole time throughout the rehearsal period and the main performances.

My college experience was so inspirational and being offered my first professional contact just 2 weeks after graduation was a dream come true. I worked for Carnival Cruise lines for the best part of two and a half years and loved every second of the professional life. However sadly due to injuries I was forced to hang my boots up and at this point I found a new passion for Pilates and decided to sign up to a intensive course to become a fully qualified instructor at all levels. Further to this I have recently become a fully qualified Pre and Post natal Pilates instructor which I felt brought a little something extra to my CV.

I have never lost the passion and love that I have for Dance which is why I decided to look into furthering my Qualification that I received at the Northern Ballet School and applied for the BAPP Arts course. I still feel very involved with the dance scene as I have been helping out at my local dance school along with volunteering at my old state school in the A Level and GCSE dance classes.

I am very much looking forward to getting 'stuck in' to the course and am excited to explore the world of blogging!
